1. WHO ARE WE - THE REGION
Of the 13 regions in Namibia, Khomas Region is the most central region serving 26 secondary schools and 55 primary schools totaling up to 1924 teachers and 54 138 learners. Most of these schools are situated in the urban area of Windhoek, the capital of Namibia and reflects the colourful and contrasting characteristics which are typical of our country.
The Khomas Education Regional Office is situated in the Frans Indongo Gardens, (7 th - 11 th floor) in Dr. Frans Aupa Indongo Street, Windhoek. The RACE office, a First Aids Room as well as a HIV & AIDS Resource Room are on the 8 th floor.
2. OUR VISION
The devastating impacts of HIV & AIDS are widely recognized and as the Khomas Regional AIDS Committee for Education we strive to reduce the transmission of HIV, mitigating the social and economic impact of AIDS on the Namibian education system on all levels.
We are dedicated to this vision and are constantly evaluating our strategies and action plans on how we can improve our own personal and professional commitment to make a difference and above all to change the attitude of all our people through providing the correct information and support.
3. GENERAL INFORMATION
3.1 PROGRAMMES
With assistance from UNICEF, the following Ministry of Education prevention programmes are running in schools in the Khomas Region:
Primary Schools
The Junior Window of Hope After School Programme (targeting grades 4 & 5 learners) and the Senior Window of Hope After School Programme (targeting grades 6 & 7 learners) were implemented in 2004 and 2005 respectively. Till date altogether 111 teachers were trained by two regional Window of Hope trainers.
Secondary Schools
My Future is My Choice, also an extra curricular life skills training programme for adolescents (age 15 - 18) consists of 10 sessions which are facilitated by volunteers.
Most schools have also well established HIV & AIDS Awareness Clubs and on national events such as HIV & AIDS Awareness Week, World AIDS Day, Day of the Namibian Child, etc. schools specifically contribute by raising an awareness amongst our learners.
Apart from the government programmes, numerous medium and short term initiatives are also taken place, e.g. the Speaker Series (where positive people reach out to schools addressing the reality of living with HIV); initiatives from The Catholic AIDS Action, Phillipi Trust Namibia, Childline/ Lifeline, The City of Windhoek, the Red Cross Society, etc.
3.2 WHO TO CONTACT
Besides the HIV & AIDS Coordinator(s) in each of the schools, teacher counselors have also been extensively trained by the Regional School Counsellor. These teachers, in collaboration with every teacher in the school, are expected to support, guide and counsel learners-in-need (who display emotional-behavioural difficulties or who might be orphaned or vulnerable, or infected or affected by HIV & AIDS).
The following teacher-convenors of the counseling support groups in the primary and secondary schools respectively may be contacted for further information:
